This July, three major entities of diabetes care in Taiwan, Chinese Taipei Diabetes Association (CTDA), Taiwanese Association of Diabetes Educators (TADE), and Formosan Diabetes Care Foundation (FDCF), formed a long term collaboration to support “ the UN resolution on diabetes” and “unite for diabetes” originated by IDF. To make this effort become a realistic action campaign, they decided to work together and build a platform, under the name as “changing diabetes”, for activity implementation on “unite for diabetes” propaganda.
On December 20th, 2006, the UN Assembly passed “The Resolution on Diabetes 61/225”, proposed by IDF and urged all governments to work together to counteract the developing threaten from global trend of diabetes. Even Taiwan is unfairly excluded from the United Nations, but we refused to be kept remote from this global concern. Rather, Taiwan showed her support on this issue as soon as the resolution was passed; by signing the support declaration represented by CTDA, and promised that Taiwan will fulfil her responsibility on curbing the global prevalence trend, by enhancement on the domestic management on diabetes.
Diabetes is a silent killer responsible for one death every 10 seconds
According to the surveillance report by IDF, diabetes results in 3.8 millions deaths every year worldwide. Every 10 seconds, one will die from diabetes and two newly diagnosed. It is estimated that, to the year of 2025, the affected population by diabetes globally will hit 3,800 million. Due to the severe nature of this findings, IDF initiated “unite for diabetes” campaign to raise the awareness on diabetes development, and encourage people take solid actions to restrain this fastest spread non-contagious disease.
When the United Nations passed the resolution 61/225, the Grand Assembly recognized November 14, the original “World Diabetes Day”, as one of the United Nation Day. The “blue circle” adopted from IDF’s origination became the global symbol for “unite for diabetes” campaign, indicating the unified effort by diabetes care stakeholders globally.
CTDA, TADE and FDCF acted instantly to echo “The UN resolution on Diabetes” by an initiative activity of “changing the future of diabetes in Taiwan” Forum, on July 7, 2007. In the forum, panellists of all stakeholders discussed major concerns in diabetes care and prioritized the future actions to restrain the prevalence of diabetes and change the future faces of diabetes in Taiwan.
“Changing Diabetes” program has launched, a serial of actions aiming on raising public awareness and building the implementation milestones have been placed: “Signature to support on unite for diabetes”, “drawing contest for children with diabetes”, “College Champion” and “Changing Diabetes Bus Taiwan Tour”, etc. are on the way to run. We sincerely invite you to hand out and join our united circle of “changing diabetes”. Let’s change our future with diabetes together.
